In order to make your wedding distinctive and memorable, you’re probably going to want to choose some unique and meaningful “extras” to entertain and interest your guests. We all have a pretty good idea of the main elements to a wedding: venue, dresses, wine, photographer, etc, but often it’s the smaller, thoughtful touches which help to differentiate your day.
Some couples provide garden games if they have an outdoor wedding. We’ve seen mini-badminton, human draughts boards, bouncy castles (for adults as well as kids) and even french boules (it was a French-themed wedding and we provided the authentic crêpes). However, all of those (with the exception of the crepes, of course) did depend on the weather being good for them to work out. Thankfully, it’s always dry at every wedding we attend (almost true, actually!) so the outdoor features worked out well.
One thing which is not weather dependent and is always popular is a caricaturist. Often a bride and grrom will choose something which is meaningful to them, and in the case of arty-types, having a personal artist resident for a few hours is an appropriate choice.
Artistic touch at a wedding
Without exception, guests love having their sketches done. There is something within us all that makes us want to be the subject of a piece of “art” and a fun portrait sketch is about as close as most of will ever get. Usually they take 5-10 minutes and it is a fascinating process to watch. It’s not only enjoyable for the subject, but other guests can watch how the drawing is done and (usually) have a good laugh into the bargain.
Another benefit is that each guest gets to take away a momento of the day which personal to them, and some artists even personalise the paper on which it’s drawn – eg “Drawn at X and Y’s wedding, June 2014” or work on tablets and iPads.
Some of the results are very impressive indeed. Having spoken to a few caricaturists, it’s apparent that some are quite accomplished artists and could probably make a living in other areas. But the common theme is that they enjoy what they do and have fun at events such as weddings, getting positive feedback from guests and making a difference to the day.
Obviously it’s not just guests who enjoy having their portraits drawn. One of the many pleasures of having a mobile crêperie is that (because everyone likes pancakes) we are always very popular with other wedding service providers. Which means that exchanging a Nutella crêpe for a personalised drawing is an exchange we are more than happy to make.
