We were reminiscing earlier about a very creative wedding we attended several years ago in York. The bride was very arty and was quite keen on as many things as possible at her wedding being handmade. We got the impression this wasn’t for financial reasons, more a desire for as much as possible to be “authentic” and having a human, handmade feel to it.
As wedding caterers who make freshly make crepes to order, we ticked the necessary creative box, and there was another company in attendance who supplied handmade pies, so the catering options were fairly easy for her to arrange in keeping with the ‘handmade’ theme.
Other aspects such as the wedding dress and suit looked either handmade, “thrift store”-bought or at the very least with bespoke modifications. Guests had clearly been encouraged to join-in with the spirit of the wedding and at a guess, many of the friends of the bride and groom were creative or artistic judging by their appearance and contributions to the day.
Inevitably, not all guests were of an artistic persuasion, but the bride had done her best to change that by setting aside a “craft area”, happily for us located near our crepe stand. All guests were encouraged to join in with the feelof the day, and simple things such as elasticated bow-ties and easy-to-put-together brooches were laid out in their component parts, with several guests on hand to offer (a small amount) of guidance if required. Some guests were in their element, others had never got involved in that type of thing before (particularly at a wedding) and clearly found it be quite enjoyable. A couple of guests kindly made each of us a calligraphic name-badge, which we thought was a nice touch and warranted an exchange for a nutella crepe.
Everyone took an interest in the “craft department” of the wedding, and there were so many different possibilities with the materials on offer that there were some quite interesting and unique wedding artworks created on the day. The bride clearly had a good idea of what the majority of her guests would respond to and what everyone had made proved to be an excellent point of discussion amongst guests standing around munching their handmade wedding crepes.
