As wedding caterers working in the wedding industry, we think about weddings a lot. Inevitably, sometimes we come up with ideas for weddings. Usually they aren’t very good at all and sometimes they are absolute rubbish. We are lucky in that one time – just once – we had a fantastic brainwave : offering crêpes as catering at weddings. And despite what others may try and have you believe, we were the first company to specialise in this – which is why we are called “Original Crepes”. And as a result, we have made many couples wedding days that bit more memorable, a fact which gives us great pleasure. However, not all our ideas are as good. The following idea is definitely not in that division. In fact, it might struggle to even make it into the “rubbish” category.
We were talking about some of the features we had seen at some of the weddings where our mobile crepe bar had been hired, and we realised that we had never seen a fortune teller at a wedding. Maybe there is a good reason for that (it’s a rubbish idea, remember) but we do think in some circumstances it may work. All that is required is: a crystal ball; a small circular table (complete with table cloth); a headscarf; and an old woman resembling a stereotypical gypsy. You will note that no fortune-telling abilities are required.
Guests would be encouraged to gather round as one of their number has their palm read by the “fortune teller”, and ideally, the fortune teller would have been forewarned about some events in the past – and, more importantly, planned events in the future – for this specific individual. Depending on who the guest/victim is, the stories can be embarrassing or otherwise, but the potential for amusement and entertainment is high.
Children would probably enjoy this experience a lot and it would be quite easy for the right person to generate a few scripts / stock ideas / jokes which could be used at every wedding. That point in the day between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast can be a bit of a problem as guests have very little going on while the photographer has time alone with the bride and groom. We have always found that offering crêpes as an alternative to canapés at this point in the day is hugely successful, as it forms both food and entertainment. But in addition to crepes, perhaps your guest would like to be entertained by a joke fortune teller.
We see a bright future ahead for that idea…
